Jack Watkins
Wonderland.
Jack Watkins is a British singer-songwriter-producer. A classically trained pianist from the age of six, his music is heavily influenced by his passion for pop in all its forms, including electronic, synth, commercial, dance and LGBTQ+.
Following the work we did together for Jack’s second EP release in 2023, I am thrilled to have contributed to his outstanding debut album and concert, Wonderland.
As always, Jack had a clear vision for this project, aiming not just to launch a debut album but to build an immersive world around the concept of Wonderland through music, lyrics, artwork, theatre and merchandise. Across 16 powerful tracks in dialogue with the piano, each song captures a scene that explores the joyful, painful, messy and colourful experiences of life.
The lyrics
It was a joy for me to work with Jack on lyrics for so many special songs on the album, including Wonderland, the euphoric title track. We wanted to capture the idea of music as a magical destination, a place we can go to feel all the feelings.
Take a trip to Wonderland
Gotta go to understand
The technicolour playground in my head
Come with me to Wonderland
Open up, watch your world expand
It’s like you’re dreaming
But it’s real
WONDERLAND
WRITTEN BY JACK WATKINS & CLARE YARWOOD-WHITE
I wrote lyrics for the beautifully orchestrated Raining Diamonds, the dramatic Renaissance, the haunting Solo, and the upbeat dance tracks Feeling, Gold and Sanctuary.
Concluding the album is our most recent co-write, Let the Music Play (Dancing in the Rain). The song wraps its arms around a deeply personal body of work, pulling the story together into a reflective album finale. Production is stripped back to where it all began, just Jack and his piano, and I used the lyrics to reference all the chapters of Jack's musical journey so far.
I’m a statue
I’m electric
I’m as good as gold
I’m up in space
I found my safe place
I’m alone
I’ve said goodbye
I’m questioning it all
A magician
A contradiction
If it rains again
Then let the music play
Maybe we could go
Dancing in the rain?
When it rains again
The music’s gonna play
Maybe we could go
Dancing in the rain
LET THE MUSIC PLAY (DANCING IN THE RAIN)
